Machair is a Gaelic word meaning fertile, low-lying grassy plain. According to the Scottish Wildlife Trust ‘machair’ refers to a unique habitat that is one of the rarest in Europe; only occurring on the exposed west-facing shores of Scotland and Ireland. When visiting the Outer Hebrides, as we often do, it is a sight to behold. Think wildflower meadow extreme. It’s a feast for the eyes, ears and senses, especially if you’re a photographer or painter. This impression is only that. I couldn’t hope to capture it in it’s full glory.
